Five tips for finding the perfect Christmas wine gift
Struggling to choose the perfect Christmas gift for someone? A bottle of wine is always a safe bet. But choosing the right one can be tricky – until you’ve read our simple guide.
How do you find the perfect Christmas wine for someone?
Wine makes a great gift at Christmas. It’s classy, but fun. And let’s be honest – an extra bottle never goes amiss this time of year. Plus, you can spend a little or a lot, depending on who’s on your list. But with such a huge variety of grapes and styles of wine available, there are a lot of bottles to choose from.
With that in mind, here are our top tips for choosing the perfect Christmas wine gift:

1. Know their preferences
If you know what wine your recipient likes, that’s always the best starting point. Are they a fan of big bold reds like Barossa Shiraz? Then go for something like Gold-medal-winning The Pastor’s Son – a big, hearty Shiraz in the classic Barossa style – and you’re sure to impress. Or maybe they’re the crisp, elegant Sauvignon Blanc type? Knock their socks off with a bottle of Cape Barren Native Goose – rated 91 points by James Halliday.
But what if you don’t know their preferences? It’s worth putting in a bit of effort to find out. You could ask a friend or relative that might know – or even check in on their social posts to see if they’ve pictured themselves in a restaurant with a special bottle.

2. Choose something to match their personality
If you really can’t find out what they like, you could choose a wine to match their personality. Are they an adventurous, outgoing type, always up for something new? Then go for something they might not have tried before – like RedHeads Coco Rotie. It’s made – just like France’s exclusive (and very pricy) Côte Rotie – by fermenting Shiraz together with a small portion in Viognier. And it tastes amazing.
Or pick an Albariño – an up-and-coming grape that’s just starting to appear on the smartest restaurant wine lists. Margan Ceres Albariño is the first of its kind from Hunter Valley – and has already scooped 90 points from James Halliday.
But what if you’re buying for someone who has more traditional tastes? Pick a classic like a Coonawarra Cabernet or a Margaret River Chardonnay. Jim Barry Kirribilli Single Vineyard Coonawarra Cabernet or Risky Business White Knuckle Margaret River Chardonnay would fit the bill perfectly.

3. Pick a practical Christmas wine gift
If you don’t know what wine they like – and you don’t want to guess – we still have some great options for you! Visit our Wine Accessories page and you’ll find all sorts of useful wine gifts, perfect for this time of year.
Our Wine Picnic Table is perfect for the beach. With slots for four glasses and another for a bottle, it’ll prevent unfortunate spills – you don’t want the crabs getting your share! You can complete the set with a Two-bottle Wine Chiller with a handy carry handle and a pair of Stemmed Plastic Glasses to keep your whites cool and prevent breakages on the way.

4. Find the right price range
Looking for an affordable Christmas gift? Whether it’s for your office Kris Kringle or an extra stocking filler, we have wines from $10 a bottle that should fit the bill.
Or, if you’re really looking to impress, sparkling wine (whether Champagne from France our own top-quality Aussie fizz) is the go-to choice. The Corryton Burge Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay is always a winner.
Whatever price range you’re looking for, you can find it using the filters on our Wine Page.

5. Go big – with a specially chosen wine mixed case
Of course, if you're buying for someone really important, you don’t want to take any chances. A mixed case will keep them stocked up at least through to New Year’s Eve – and we’ve a great selection on our Wine Gifts Page. Our top tip? The Gold Medal Red and Whites dozen is guaranteed to impress.
We hope you’ve found some inspiration for your Christmas wine gifts here. But if you’re still not sure – why not treat them to a gift card and let them choose their own wine?
